Château d'Yquem
The sole Premier Cru Supérieur of the 1855 classification, a rank created for it alone and never awarded to any other château, Yquem crowns the hill above the commune of Sauternes. Its vineyard is drained by tens of kilometres of terracotta drains laid in the nineteenth century, and the estate declines to make its wine at all in vintages it judges insufficient.
