"Alsace grand cru Altenberg de Bergbieten" is one of the fifty-one "Alsace grand cru" appellations, in the commune of Bergbieten (Bas-Rhin), recognised in 1983. In a very open landscape at the heart of a broad cirque, well away from the crystalline Vosges, the vineyard enjoys a warm, dry mesoclimate; dolomitic stones in the gypsum-bearing clay-marl soil aid drainage and warming.
