"Alsace grand cru Rangen" is one of the fifty-one "Alsace grand cru" appellations, in the communes of Thann and Vieux-Thann (Haut-Rhin), recognised in 1983. The southernmost grand cru in Alsace, 22 hectares in a single block between 350 and 450 metres, on a very steep slope (90% on average): this Carboniferous-age terroir of volcanic sedimentary rock (greywacke, volcanic tuff, a micaceous brown andesite) forms a layer 40 to 60 cm thick over fissured bedrock that roots can penetrate deeply.
