Appellation

Flagey-Échezeaux

A Côte de Nuits commune whose two grands crus, Échezeaux and Grands-Échezeaux, back onto the Clos de Vougeot at the mouth of a steep-sided combe. Flagey has no village appellation of its own: its village wines are sold as AOC Vosne-Romanée, and three of its climats are classified as premier cru of that appellation.

  • Échezeaux

The largest grand cru of the sector: thirty-six hectares in production, on the lower slope and piedmont of Flagey-Échezeaux, at the mouth of a steep-sided combe, between 260 and 300 metres. The climat gathers several named plots of rather different character, from very stony, shallow ground high on the slope to more clayey soils lying on the limestone slab. It adjoins the Clos de Vougeot and belongs to the commune of Flagey-Échezeaux alone.

  • Grands-Échezeaux

Nine hectares tucked at the foot of the Côte, on the piedmont, at the mouth of the combe that built a small alluvial fan here. The soils, shallow and strongly clayey, still drain well over the shallow limestone slab, and iron oxides give them their red colour. An immediate neighbour of the Clos de Vougeot, the climat is held to be more homogeneous and more substantial than the Échezeaux above it.
