Some fifteen kilometres from Angers, on the right bank of the Loire, Savennières covers the south-facing slopes of three communes: Bouchemaine, La Possonnière and Savennières. The appellation makes only still white wines from Chenin Blanc alone, picked by hand, selecting the bunches on the vine, on shallow schist and sandstone soils. The wines are most often dry, though the appellation also allows medium-dry, medium-sweet and sweet wines. Two separate appellations, Coulée de Serrant and Savennières Roche aux Moines, lie within the commune of Savennières.
