"Alsace grand cru Kastelberg" is one of the fifty-one "Alsace grand cru" appellations, in the commune of Andlau (Bas-Rhin), recognised in 1983. This sun-facing site sits on schist — a unique case in the Alsace vineyard — metamorphosed into a very hard rock that gives stony, well-drained soils where roots run deep along the schist's cleavage planes.
