"Alsace grand cru Steinert" is one of the fifty-one "Alsace grand cru" appellations, in the communes of Pfaffenheim and Westhalten (Haut-Rhin), recognised in 1992. Backing onto the Schauenberg above it, this promontory is made entirely of very hard oolitic limestone; the shallow soil holds many fragments of limestone bedrock that release stored heat back to the vines.
