1855 · Bordeaux
The Official Bordeaux Wine Classification of 1855 — Médoc and Graves
- Authority
- The wine brokers of the Bordeaux exchange, acting as a guild, at the request of the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce, which had itself been asked by the imperial government to present the department's wines at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1855.
- Methodology
- The brokers did not taste: they transcribed a commercial hierarchy that the market had built up over nearly a century, working from the selling prices recorded in their own registers over a long period. A growth appeared on the list, and at a given rank, because of its consistent and demonstrated ability to sell at that price. The list, transcribed in April 1855, was already largely known to the trade and had been printed in guidebooks since the 1820s.
| Rank | Growth | Commune | Since |
|---|---|---|---|
| First Growths | |||
| 1 | Château Lafite Rothschild | Pauillac | 1855 |
| 1 | Château Latour | Pauillac | 1855 |
| 1 | Château Margaux | Margaux | 1855 |
| 1 | Château Mouton Rothschild 1855 — Addition : Classified a second growth by the brokers in 1855, under the name Château Mouton. 1973 — Promotion : Promoted to first growth in June 1973, after a campaign of more than twenty years led by Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The instrument was signed by Jacques Chirac, then Minister of Agriculture. It is the only change of rank in the classification's history. | Pauillac | 1973 |
| 1 | Château Haut-Brion The only classified growth outside the Médoc. In 1855 the brokers placed it in the Graves; the Pessac-Léognan AOC under which it is made today was only created in 1987. The Conseil's official list places it under the appellation Pessac, after its commune. | Pessac-Léognan | 1855 |
| Second Growths | |||
| 2 | Château Rauzan-Ségla | Margaux | 1855 |
| 2 | Château Rauzan-Gassies | Margaux | 1855 |
| 2 | Château Léoville Las Cases This growth does not appear on the list published by the Conseil des Grands Crus Classés en 1855, which records its members only and therefore names just thirteen at this rank while stating that there are fourteen second growths. Its rank as a second growth is not disputed. | Saint-Julien | 1855 |
| 2 | Château Léoville Poyferré | Saint-Julien | 1855 |
| 2 | Château Léoville Barton | Saint-Julien | 1855 |
| 2 | Château Durfort-Vivens | Margaux | 1855 |
| 2 | Château Gruaud Larose | Saint-Julien | 1855 |
| 2 | Château Lascombes | Margaux | 1855 |
| 2 | Château Brane-Cantenac | Margaux | 1855 |
| 2 | Château Pichon Baron | Pauillac | 1855 |
| 2 | Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande | Pauillac | 1855 |
| 2 | Château Ducru-Beaucaillou | Saint-Julien | 1855 |
| 2 | Château Cos d'Estournel | Saint-Estèphe | 1855 |
| 2 | Château Montrose | Saint-Estèphe | 1855 |
| Third Growths— One third growth of 1855 has disappeared: Château Dubignon, in Margaux, reputedly the smallest growth on the whole list, was sold in the 1870s and its vineyard absorbed into Château Malescot Saint-Exupéry. No wine is made under the name any more, and the rank was never reassigned: this is why the level holds fourteen growths and not fifteen. | |||

The date of 1942 is the most often cited but is not consistently established. | Pauillac | 1855 |
| 5 | Château Haut-Batailley 1942 — Split : The part detached from Château Batailley; see the note on Batailley for the uncertainty over the date. | Pauillac | 1855 |

| 5 | Château Cantemerle 1855 — Addition : Absent from the brokers' list made public on 18 April 1855, Château Cantemerle was written into it by hand on 16 September 1855, during the Universal Exhibition. The omission was due to its trade route — its barrels went straight to Holland without passing through the Bordeaux marketplace, so its prices did not appear in the brokers' registers — and not to the quality of its wine. It is the only addition in the classification's history. | Haut-Médoc | 1855 |
